In 2019, anything ugly has made its way to the forefront of fashion. The second prevailing reason we might have for why fashion is so ugly is the antithesis of the former. It posits that fashion has become more diverse and artistic over time. True art and aesthetic beauty is deep and up to interpretation.... read more ›

Photo: John Phillips/Getty Images. About a week later, I passed by the Gucci flagship on Fifth when another man — another tourist, likely — was staring at the luxury brand's latest looks when he shook his head, defeated, and shrugged: "I don't get it.". A look from Prada's Fall 2016 collection.. "Ugly clothing is just badly designed garments.". "Coupled with the rise of Instagram and popularity of fashion bloggers, it really took off.. "I'm terrified of basicness," Whittington echoes.. "We live in a world where our lives are constantly on display and you don't want to be seen as just like everyone else — we are so concerned with building a personal brand that's unique, special and has a different perspective, so when someone calls you basic, it's tearing down your whole brand and everything that you've worked so hard to build," Collins says.. I wear oversize pieces, menswear and mom jeans all the time, all of which would be considered ugly by a lot of people who are dictating what clothing should look like for plus-size women.. "We're seeing, for the first time, the younger generation is heading up the trends versus the trends trickling down, so teenagers will love something and then millennials will pick them up, because they're so obsessed with being young and cool," Collins explains.. The '90s came to an end eventually — and so, too, will ugly fashion, just like every trend before it.. So once ugly fashion becomes mainstream, it will inevitably flip.

Since the beginning of the avant garde — a period of radical fashion upheaval inspired by the likes of Martin Margiela and Rei Kawakubo — fashion has fragmented itself into two artistic categories: the first being the theory of fashion as a traditional medium of form-fitting art.. This is what fashion was before the 1980’s, where the elite classes of society were the target audience of fashion houses.. Ugly fashion arose out of the latter part of fashion’s history; therefore, it’s largely misunderstood, even by the capital-F fashion crowd.. Ugly fashion is an emerging strain of fashion design that prioritizes stark utility or dysfunctionality.. From brands like Undercover to Gucci, ugly fashion has now overtaken the traditional sphere of fashion, bringing it to the mainstream.. If fashion is an art form, and art is meant to be visually pleasing, why has fashion become so dismembered from traditional norms of beauty?. Now that’s out of the way, let’s understand the force of ugly fashion.. Ergo, the era of bold changes and radical moves from luxury brands was in full swing: Louis Vuitton appointed Virgil Abloh, founder of streetwear label Off-White who has no fashion design training, to head their menswear line; Balenciaga made Demna Gvasalia, a man who spent two years disrupting the fashion world with ugly designs and edgy commentary, their creative director; Hedi Slimane dropped the “Yves” in YSL, radically changing the house to fit his monochromatic punk-rock aesthetic.. Drawing on this idea, ugly clothing is one of the quickest ways to get those outside the fashion circle to care about fashion.. The problem is, all the media attention around ugly fashion plays right into the hands of the labels, incentivizing them to create even more outrageous clothing.. In 2019, anything ugly has made its way to the forefront of fashion.. Consumers are attracted by meaningful art, and thus ugly fashion has quietly made its way to the top of the fashion world.. It’s unlikely, then, that the wave of ugly fashion is going to go away.. As Demna Gvasalia puts it: “I started Vetements because I was bored of fashion and against all odds fashion did change once and forever since Vetements appeared and it also opened a new door for so many.” As long as newer generations are looking for more, huge players like Gvasalia and Vetements will succeed for years to come.
Now, as ’00s trends make their way back to the runway, the high-fashion crowd has begun wearing these kitschy designs in full irony of its perceived “ugliness.” The same could be said for Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake turning double-denim into formalwear on the red carpet, an aesthetic that celebrities have continued into modern day style .. Now, ugly is entirely in the eye of the beholder—so to pinpoint what “ugly fashion” constitutes will never generate just one definition.. In contrast to the breathtaking haute couture gowns , sexy stilettos , and matchy-matchy tweed suits that grace the runways season after season, “ugly fashion” prioritizes practicality, utility, and everyday wear without forsaking style.. “Fashion is demystifying the notion of ugliness,” fashion researcher Joelle Firzli tells CR.. Ugliness in fashion makes fashion relevant.”. Similarly, Dries van Noten once mentioned that he bases many of his collections on a color he doesn’t like, and that “nothing is so boring as something beautiful.” His Spring/Summer 2019 collection was headlined by boiler suits (commonly seen on mechanics, railroad workers, and the cast of Ghostbusters ) that weretied loosely around the models’ waists and equipped with utility pockets.. Ugly fashion can be seen as the latest iteration of normcore, a unisex trend that took over the runways in 2014 and popularized unpretentious, everyday clothing including Patagonia zip-ups, hoodies, and sweatpants.. “I think inclusivity and diversity plays a role in [why] the ugly beautiful trend is strong.” says Geraldine Wharry , a trend and fashion forecaster.. [It] makes for a very experimental time in fashion in terms of pushing boundaries in color, shapes, unisex fashion, or gender-bending fashion, leading [designers] to thrive within the notion of ugly beautiful.. Indeed, Chitose Abe described her brand Sacai as one which “embodies the notion that women can wear what they want, how they want, when they want.” For her Spring/Summer 2019 collection, this conviction was showcased on an army of models donning layers of deconstructed pleats interlaced with utility wear—from cargo pants to fishing vests.. Certainly, the contemporary ugly aesthetic seems to trump pretty in terms of its re-usability: After all, its entire concept is based upon a recycling of forgotten-about staple classics, not of-the-moment pieces: from that vintage boiler suit to your dad’s sneakers.
From clunky Dutch workwear to controversial fashion favourite, Daisy Woodward explores why the distinctive wooden-soled shoe is a symbol of now.
The clog is enjoying a 21st-Century high-fashion renaissance (Credit Getty Images). Clogs arrived in Britain as early as the 1300s, but unlike the all-wooden Dutch versions, they consisted of wooden soles and leather uppers, explains Jeremy Atkinson , England's last traditional clog maker.. Their popularity only began to wane in the mid 1800s, "when hobnail boots became more affordable".. So what is it about the clog that particularly appeals to a 2020s audience?. This sentiment was the driving force behind the inception of California clog brand Santa Venetia which began in 2017.. These were the shoes that formed the template for Santa Venetia's first design, Greenhill notes, "and since then we've been creating clogs that are a bit unexpected, just a little bit different from your regular clog".
Ugly fashion is a mirror; it reveals the repulsive nature of our consumerist desires. All ugly fashion is political, but also, all fashion is ugly if you look at it through a politicized lens.
There are many examples of subcultures throughout the twentieth century that embraced purposefully offensive clothing, from the pants-wearing rebel women post World War I to the rockabilly babes of the fifties, but it would be wrong to call these fashions ugly.. In both the seventies and the nineties, the movement toward ugly fashion started with a subculture (punks, grunge kids) and moved into high fashion.. Now we have ugly dad sneakers and ugly floral dresses , ugly work vests and ugly sweaters .. The rise of ugly fashion in the Trump era has been thoroughly documented by fashion sites and news outlets.. Some places, like The Strategist ( New York magazine’s shopping vertical) and Refinery 29, approach ugly fashion like they would any other trend, offering readers suggestions on what ugly sneakers to buy , how to “ succumb to the siren song ” of unflattering pants, and what to wear with Teva-style sandals to make them look urban chic rather than granola crunchy.. ” articles, and the explainers, which often read like this one from Harper’s Bazaar Australia —it posits that we’re “a bunch of hyper-aware hypebeasts” obsessed with “peacocking.” The fashion critic Robin Givhan at the Washington Post argues that the recent glut of ugly trends—prairie dresses, fanny packs, orthopedic sandals, et cetera—are “aesthetic provocation” designed to agitate.. “The gateway to ugly … was the Birkenstock,” Givhan writes, calling the German sandal “an exemplar of the rise of anti-fashion.” While many fashion writers have established a link between the proliferation of unflattering clothes in street wear and the torrential downpour of assaults against women’s bodies and rights, Givhan also smartly points out that ugly fashion has a populist tinge to it.. On some bodies, ugly fashion can look like ugly clothes, which means the entire enterprise has failed.. The person wearing the ugly fashion must be in on the joke, and often the clothes must be expensive, in order to prove their intentionality.. There is something organic about ugly fashion.. The disability-justice organizer and writer Mia Mingus argues that “ugliness is a pathway to intimacy.” We fear ugliness, she says, because we place too much value on beauty.. All ugly fashion is political, but also, all fashion is ugly if you look at it through a politicized lens.. Like ugly design, ugly clothes show that there is no outside to culture.. You can read the first installment, on ugly art, here , and the second, on ugly design, here .
The costume department of "10 Things I Hate About You" is only a fraction of history.
I recently went through several rolls of 20-year-old film that were taken on school trip, primarily because pre-teen me felt that it was absolutely necessary to document how cool she felt.. In my Adidas pants , cotton tank top and khaki Gap bucket hat , I had finally Made It.. I was 13, successfully interacting with the boy I liked and forcing everybody in my eighth grade class to pose for countless photos with me.. I look just like Katie Holmes .. I'm sure you've already assumed that, reader, I did not look like Katie Holmes.. But, aesthetically, I wasn't too far off.. To start, let's remember that every decade is equal parts very glorious and very ugly.. Back in 2014, I believed I was chic — I was not — because I wore sneakers with large, oversized sweaters and graphic T-shirts, while as early as last year, I bought a vest, believing myself to be immune to the strange shape the garment created and always had.. So, in the same way we are the sum of our parts, each decade is the sum of its best and worst.. Joey Potter's shapeless khaki shorts both abided by dress code standards and didn't rely on brand names (or brand name prices). When my aunts cleaned out their closets, I reaped the benefits by adopting pairs of their shorts I could easily wear with no-name, thick-strapped cotton tank tops.. Instead, there were chains like Gap, or for those of us in Canada, Suzy Shier.. And I fell in love with the boys in my class whose graphic T-shirts, oversized turtlenecks and wide-legged jeans told me they'd graduated from wearing sweatpants every day.
While many people scoff at some of the latest shoe styles — Bottega Veneta’s Puddle Boots, Christopher Kane’s Z-Coil sandal, and Balenciaga’s many styles of Crocs — many more are taking out their credit cards. We spoke to psychologists to find out why.
Photo: Matt Jelonek/WireImage.. “Ugly fashion attracts attention because it is different,” explains Carolyn Mair, Ph.D ., a cognitive psychologist who specializes in fashion.. By drawing the viewer’s attention, she adds, ugly fashion becomes fascinating.. “If you and I have been indoors, and we haven’t had in-person interactions, going outdoors and wearing ugly footwear like the [Balenciaga] Croc stiletto will cause people to look at our feet, and they will begin to engage us,” she says.. Even as the world begins to open back up and many of our lives return to some sense of normalcy, ugly footwear shows no signs of slowing down.. Remember Isabel Marant’s iconic Bekett sneaker from the early 2010s (which some refer to as the OG ugly footwear)?. Photo: Courtesy of Isabel Marant.. Dr. Johnson mentions that throughout the pandemic, we’ve grown accustomed to the comfort of spending time at home — and the comfortable, ugly shoes that come with that.. Balenciaga x Croc Spring 2022.. The instinct toward the ugly “comes back to differentiation,” Dr. Johnson adds.. “It’s a confidence move to wear Crocs, as if saying, ‘I’m so cool that I can wear these ugly shoes and still be cool.’ Or better yet, ‘I’m so cool, I can make Crocs look cool, ’” posits Dr. Johnson.
